  18. <p>    As soon as he's finished battling Customs, Treasury, the
  19. Department of Transportation, the Coast Guard and much of the
  20. White House staff, Drug Enforcement Administration chief ROBERT
  21. BONNER may want to begin circulating his resume. Bonner started
  22. the fight with "Operation Granite," a new drug-interdiction
  23. scheme he concocted for the Caribbean. Under a plan that one top
  24. Administration source calls "remarkably stupid," DEA would base
  25. 10 Black Hawk helicopters in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic
  26. for chasing down drug smugglers flying out of Colombia. One of
  27. Bonner's targets: drugs being air-dropped to boats. Customs and
  28. the Coast Guard objected, since they already operate large
  29. interdiction forces in the Caribbean. Besides, the air drops are
  30. declining, according to DEA information that agency chief Bonner
  31. apparently did not note. Attorney General William Barr, though,
  32. has been "slamming the table," say critics, in support of
  33. Bonner. Barr may be Bonner's last line of defense. DEA agents,
  34. who call their boss "Marco Polo" for his habit of official
  35. travel to exotic climes, have been scratching their heads over
  36. the plan. President Bush is expected to referee the squabble
  37. this week.

  39. <p>    Not so Fast, Comrade
  40. </p>
  41. <p>    Congress cheered when Boris Yeltsin promised last week
  42. that "the idol of communism" has "collapsed, never to rise
  43. again." But he'd better watch his back at home. Yeltsin's Vice
  44. President, ALEXANDER RUTSKOI, a hero of the Afghan conflict,
  45. openly opposes many of Yeltsin's reforms, derisively referring
  46. to the Russian President's aides as "little boys in pink
  47. shorts." Even as Yeltsin was meeting President Bush last week,
  48. Andrei Sidelnikov, a top Rutskoi aide and fellow war hero, was
  49. treating Washington to a different view, one thought to be
  50. shared by Rutskoi. Said Sidelnikov: "I don't see why I should
  51. give up the ideals of the party just because 100 or so people
  52. betrayed communism. Before, we had beautiful movies, sport,
  53. culture. And now what happens? All of our best people are going
  54. to America. And what do we get? Prostitutes, criminals, the
  55. Mafia."

  59. <p>    Ever since her searing experience during the Thomas
  60. hearings, University of Oklahoma law professor ANITA HILL has
  61. kept her own counsel for the most part. Not anymore. Beginning
  62. in August, Hill will take a nine-month sabbatical to explore the
  63. notion of founding (and funding) an institute to study racism
  64. and sexism in the U.S. Meanwhile, on Oct. 16, Hill and
  65. Georgetown University law professor Emma Jordan will convene a
  66. one-day conference on "Race, Gender and Power in America." Hill
  67. will take the mike as keynote speaker.

  71. <p>    Fallen Angel, a play about a rock band that is opening in
  72. Chicago next month, features a memorable jailhouse scene in
  73. which the young leader of the band visits his father, a
  74. convicted financier. Perhaps the playwright, BILLY BOESKY,
  75. understood the material all too well. His father, Ivan Boesky,
  76. served two years (1988-90) for stock-trading crimes.

  82. <p>    California is nearly broke, and may start paying workers
  83. with IOUS. No wonder half the Californians in a new Young &
  84. Rubicam survey say they'd be better off in another state. Look
  85. for a new surge to Oregon and the Rockies.

  87. <p>    HEALING TRAVEL

  89. <p>    Banged-up vacationers who have grown weary of white-water
  90. kayaking, dangling from cliffs and other trendy adventure trips
  91. are now turning to spiritual vacations featuring meditation and
  92. silence. Next: virtual-reality travel; you don't leave home at
  93. all.

  97. <p>    Lloyd Bentsen said not long ago that George Bush must be
  98. a real Texan because "he can rope, tie and brand a lobster with
  99. the best of them." Now a New Jersey farming community has
  100. discovered that its cows like to eat clams and other seafood.
